On Saturday the 10th April a 1 day old white rhino calf was rescued from a private reserve in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa and brought through to the Zululand Rhino Orphanage. The baby rhino had been found traumatised and vulnerable, and in desperate need of nourishment. His mother had severely damaged and infected udders that were not functioning and she was therefore not able to produce any milk. The calf was brought through to us and given a rhino plasma transfusion to help strengthen his immune system as he had not received colostrum from his mother. He was named Inkululeko (Leko for short) which means freedom in Zulu. He showed extremely positive signs that he would survive his traumatic start in life and we hope that he will one day roam free again in the wild where he belongs.
