BIG 6 EXCLUSIVE RIDE

To all our Big 6 riders, helpers and sponsors…

We did it!

With your participation, we pulled off the first-ever Big 6 Exclusive Ride, and wow, what an event it was!

With your help, we raised an amazing R302 530,75!!! These funds will be used exclusively for the conservation and community projects of Zululand Conservation Trust and the Zululand Rhino Orphanage.

On the 21st – 23rd July 2019, ZCT hosted our first ever exclusive cycle ride called the Big 6. Outsourcing Under Canvas Events allowed us to create a magical glamp site nestled in a fever tree forest right on the dry Msunduze river on Manyoni Private Game Reserve. With under 50 cyclists joining on this inaugural event, we enjoyed an intimate couple of days in the bush getting to know the guests on a one on one basis on the route, over a drink at the bush bar or around the fire. The event started off with an exhilarating rhino dehorning experience where guests were involved in a hands-on conservation activity and a front-row seat to the measures we take to protect our rhino populations in Zululand. Whilst guests were out in the bush, behind the scenes bags and bicycles were delivered to our secret glamp site and guests were welcomed home with warm towels and a fully stocked bar and delicious smells escaping the canvas kitchen. After a night full of the song of hyena, nightjars and the odd snorer, the cyclists got their bicycles ready and enjoyed a hearty breakfast. The route took them on a stunning 50km route through Big5 terrain with a very well-received beer stop overlooking the reserves stunning planes. Tired legs and stiff bums were welcomed back to camp with a hearty meal and hot showers on demand. After a short rest, we took guests on a sunset game drive which ended with a pop-up craft gin bar sponsored by 031 Distillery, this delicious stop got a curious elephants attention and so last rounds were hurried along by a few trumpets! The adrenalin definitely created an appetite and guests arrived at a roaring fire and wholesome meal.
The last day on the course was a 40km route, an easier slower pace with stunning river views and nice flat stretches. A hot shower, good feed and everyone were on their way with hearts full and a better understanding of the conservation of this pristine slice of the protected area we look after.

The Big 6 corporates who made this all happen, who brought the best energy and an adventurous spirit must be applauded – with little forewarning and a jump into the deep end we came out winning with Nedbank Private Wealth, Access World, RCL Foods, Investec, Teichmann Civils, Power Stores and Sequel Props. Thank you for making the first Big 6 such a great success!

Winter Warmer Project

All the blankets that kept the bicycles protected have been donated to Mzamoyethu crèche, one of the three pre-schools we support on the Western boundary of Manyoni. Each child has taken home a blanket that will keep them warm this winter – thank you to everyone for the lovely thick warm blankets that will make a big difference to the cold nights out in Inkukwini community homes.

Thank you to our Sponsors

It goes without saying, that without the support from Manyoni Private Game Reserve, none of this would have been possible. So to the management team that kept the bar going and the camp running – and to every person who marshalled on the route, assisted with game viewers and kept things running in the background, thank you!

To our sponsors Steely for the water bottles, IPSS medical team that made sure injuries were dealt with (Poen thanks for keeping them busy every day!) to the RSA team Andre and Tony – your assistance with making sure the bikes were safely transferred on the first day to keeping an eye on repairs throughout the 2 days -thank you! Sanitech for a discount on toilet transport. LT Printers for the donation of luggage labels and rider boards that looked incredible. Poison City Brewery for the donation of beers at the ever-popular Beer tent on Day 1. To 031 Distillery for the craft gin donation that we used at the pop-up gin bar which we enjoyed until that elephant chased us away! To Grant Brokensha from The Bigger Picture Films for the videography and photographs.
