Conservation is strongest when both people and nature benefit. At the Zululand Conservation Trust, supporting surrounding communities is an essential part of protecting biodiversity. Through the Growing Food for Life initiative, families are gaining practical skills that improve food security, strengthen livelihoods and build long-term resilience.
Growing More Than Food
The programme introduces participants to permaculture principles that enable them to establish productive, sustainable home gardens. By learning practical techniques for soil improvement, water conservation and crop production, families are able to grow nutritious food close to home while reducing household food costs. For many participants, these gardens become more than a source of food, they become an opportunity to generate additional income through the sale of surplus produce.

Creating Sustainable Livelihoods
Supporting food production is only part of the solution. The programme also helps connect local growers with market opportunities, allowing fresh produce to be supplied within the surrounding conservation landscape. These local markets provide an important income stream while encouraging sustainable agricultural practices that benefit both communities and the environment.
Linking Conservation and Community Development
Through partnerships with organisations that share a commitment to sustainable development, ZCT supports programmes that create employment while improving local environments. Community members are involved in activities such as invasive alien plant removal, habitat restoration and infrastructure maintenance—work that benefits conservation while providing valuable employment and practical experience. Training also extends to caring for community preschools and establishing productive food gardens, helping strengthen education, nutrition and environmental stewardship together.
A Shared Future
Healthy communities and healthy ecosystems are deeply connected. When families have access to food, practical skills and opportunities to earn an income, they are better equipped to become long-term partners in conservation. Through Growing Food for Life, the Zululand Conservation Trust continues to demonstrate that protecting biodiversity also means investing in people—creating stronger communities, healthier landscapes and a more sustainable future for all.
