At the Zululand Rhino Orphanage, every day is an adventure with our lovable crash of rhinos. Each orphan has a unique personality, and watching them grow and thrive is a rewarding experience for both their carers and volunteers. Here’s a rhino orphanage update on some of our most cherished residents and what they’ve been up to recently.
Bheji
The only black rhino at the facility, Bhejane, is a bundle of intelligence and entertainment. Her best friends include ‘Eben’ the goat and her beloved rollie (wooden cable roller). Whether cuddling or playing mentally stimulating games, Bhejane’s clever and quirky personality shines.
Mulayo
Despite her tragic start in life, Mulayo has embraced her role as the “princess” of the crash. Known for her endless singing during feed times, she has a sweet charm that captivates everyone around her. Mulayo also shares a special bond with Grumilo, who is always by her side like a knight in shining armor.
Grumilo
The oldest and wisest of the group, Grumilo, has gracefully adjusted to being one of the first weaned babies. While he may take his time during feedings (affectionately called “Grum time” by his carers), his calm demeanor and protective nature make him a cherished member of the group.
Samson
Sweet and gentle Samson has taken on the role of big brother to Griffin. Though he isn’t the bravest, his kind heart shines through in every interaction. Now part of the weaned group, Samson hasn’t given up his attempts to charm his carers into sneaking him an extra bottle of milk!
Griffin
Griffin is the undeniable heartthrob of the group. His endearing smile and docile nature make him impossible not to love. Griffin’s adorable ballerina stance during belly rubs often leaves his carers in fits of laughter—a perfect reminder of the joy these little rhinos bring.
Lazula
Though partially blind, Lazula has proven to be a resilient and spirited young rhino. His spicy personality and playful nature brighten everyone’s day. With his best friend Umoya by his side, Lazula navigates his world with confidence, proving nothing can hold him back.
Umoya
Known for her gentle nature and her habit of “mouthing” her carers after feeds, Umoya is a nurturing and playful spirit. She’s Lazula’s guide and surrogate mother when he needs extra support. Her playful antics and endearing fat forehead roll make her an unforgettable character.
Bhoboza
Bhoboza is our bouncy boy with a perpetual smile. His bubbly personality and playful skips have earned him a reputation for making his carers giggle, no matter the weather. Boza’s happy-go-lucky nature is truly infectious.
Billie
Once at death’s doorstep, Billie’s recovery has been nothing short of miraculous. Now a big brother to the younger orphans, his laid-back demeanor and adorable habit of sticking out his tongue after feeds make him a favorite among carers and visitors alike.
Ngelo
As the youngest and feistiest member of the crash, Ngelo has quickly made her mark. Known for her milky moustache after feeds and her tippy-toe prance when running for her bottle, she’s a spirited little princess learning to hold her own among her older brothers.
These rhinos remind us daily of the resilience and joy that can emerge even in the face of hardship. Each of their journeys is a testament to the care and love they receive at the Zululand Rhino Orphanage. Their stories inspire hope and serve as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts. We hope you enjoyed this rhino orphanage update.
