The good news about Kulula is that his mother was never poached. She did, however, gave birth to him while she was temporarily being held in a boma before translocation to another reserve and unfortunately ended up rejecting him. This can happen due to the stress of being in a captive situation. Monitors kept eyes on the new calf and hoped for the best but after two weeks it was decided that intervention was necessary as the calf was not suckling enough and losing condition. Kulula was brought through to our facility when he was two weeks old, weighing just 59kg! Due to his young age he accepted the change and bonded to his carers fairly quickly, hence his name Kulula (Lula for short) meaning ‘easy’. He was a lot younger than the rest of the rhino orphans in our facility at that time and ended up making friends with Leko, our oldest. He has settled well and has been given the nickname Lula-pig as he absolutely loves food and cannot get enough!
