Every year, on 22 September, the world comes together to celebrate World Rhino Day. It’s a time to reflect on the importance of these ancient giants, the threats they face, and the ongoing fight to secure their future. At the Zululand Conservation Trust (ZCT), rhino conservation is at the heart of what we do.
Protecting Rhinos Where It Matters Most
South Africa is home to the largest remaining populations of both white and black rhinos, yet these magnificent animals are under constant threat from poaching. ZCT is proud to stand at the forefront of rhino protection, supporting critical conservation strategies within Manyoni Private Game Reserve.

Our work spans several key initiatives that directly protect rhinos and ensure their survival for generations to come:
1. Rhino Horn Trimming
Horn trimming is a proactive, non-invasive method used to deter poachers. By safely and humanely removing a rhino’s horn under veterinary supervision, we reduce the risk of these animals being targeted. ZCT provides support for these operations, ensuring that every rhino within the reserve has the best possible protection against poaching threats.
2. Zululand Rhino Orphanage
When tragedy strikes and calves are left without their mothers, the Zululand Rhino Orphanage steps in to provide them with care, safety, and a second chance at life. Managed with dedication and compassion, the orphanage nurtures young rhinos until they are strong and independent enough to be released back into the wild. ZCT proudly funds and supports this vital facility, where hope is restored one calf at a time.
3. Supporting Rangers and Security
Rhino conservation wouldn’t be possible without the brave men and women who put their lives on the line daily. ZCT invests in ranger training, equipment, and security measures to ensure that those on the frontlines are well-prepared and supported. From surveillance technology to ranger welfare, we know that protecting rhinos starts with protecting those who guard them.

Why It Matters
Rhinos are more than just icons of Africa; they are ecosystem engineers that shape the landscape, creating grazing lawns that benefit countless other species. Their survival is inseparable from the health of our wilderness areas and the biodiversity they support.
Stand With Us This World Rhino Day
World Rhino Day reminds us that conservation is not the work of a single day, but a daily commitment. At ZCT, we are proud to champion rhino conservation through practical, impactful action.
Together, with your support, we can ensure that rhinos remain not just a memory of Africa’s past, but a thriving part of its future.
This World Rhino Day, stand with ZCT – stand with the rhino.
