As the year draws to a close, the Zululand Conservation Trust (ZCT) reflects on a year defined by resilience, collaboration, and meaningful conservation action. Across Zululand’s landscapes, from protected reserves to surrounding communities, this year has reinforced that effective conservation is built on commitment, innovation, and people working together for a shared purpose.
Protecting Wildlife on the Frontline
The threats facing wildlife remain persistent. Poaching, snaring, habitat loss, and human–wildlife conflict continue to challenge conservation efforts across the region. Yet through the dedication of rangers, conservation teams, and partners, ZCT has continued to strengthen protection where it matters most.
This year, we significantly upped our game in aerial surveillance. With the appointment of a full-time drone pilot and the generous donation of two drones, our ability to monitor the reserve has been greatly enhanced. This technology has become a critical tool in proactive anti-poaching efforts, allowing for quicker response times and improved situational awareness.
Along the ground, our fence guards, the Yankees, remain vigilant every single day. Their consistent presence along the fence line plays a vital role in protecting reserve boundaries, preventing incursions, and ensuring the safety of wildlife and neighbouring communities.
Caring for Rhinos and the Most Vulnerable
The Zululand Rhino Orphanage (ZRO) once again stood at the heart of rhino conservation this year. During the year, ZRO rescued and took in eight rhino calves, providing them with specialised care, protection, and rehabilitation. At the same time, eleven rhinos were successfully released back into the wild — a powerful reminder that conservation efforts can and do lead to real recovery.
These successes represent countless hours of dedication from carers, veterinarians, security teams, and supporters, all working together to give these iconic animals a second chance.
Monitoring Pangolins and Healthy Populations
Pangolin conservation remains a priority for ZCT. Throughout the year, we continued monitoring our pangolins, including swapping and maintaining their tracking tags to ensure accurate data collection and long-term welfare. Encouragingly, monitoring indicates that the pangolin population remains healthy — a positive sign that protection and conservation interventions are working.
Expanding Conservation Through Land and People
This year also marked an important step forward with the incorporation of additional property into Manyoni Game Reserve. This expansion not only strengthens habitat connectivity and conservation outcomes but also creates tangible benefits for surrounding communities.
As a result, nine new staff members were employed, providing valuable employment opportunities for community members. Habitat restoration efforts on this property are already underway, including bush clearing and the removal of invasive plant species — essential work to restore ecological balance and improve biodiversity.
Conservation Through Collaboration
None of these achievements would be possible without strong partnerships. We are grateful for the continued collaboration with reserve managers, conservation organisations, donors, volunteers, and community members. Together, we are building resilient conservation solutions that benefit both people and wildlife.
